Chateau Malescot St Exupery Margaux 1988
The ultimate pizza wine!!!
A group of us have met most weeks at a pizza parlour over a period of 30 years. It started originally after attending a regular Liquor store wine tasting and then going off for a meal afterwards taking along a few of the wines we'd enjoyed at the tasting.
Over time, we eventually dropped the wine tasting, but kept up meeting for the meal, taking along bottles of wine from our individual cellars. We used to put a cap on the bottle value due to the mixed economic circumstances of the group, but again, with time and as the majority have reached retirement age, cellar values have become blurred and the odd bottle turns up that blows everything out of the water!
Last night this Margaux appeared on the table which had apparently been puchased at auction a couple of months previously.
Doing a bit of research, 1988 wasn't listed as a good year for Bordeau
which was probably the reason why the auction price seemed quite reasonable. There were 19 of us, so the tasting size was quite small, but poured into the glass, the colour was still bright red with no browning around the edge. On the nose, it was quite clean with none of the farmyard smell from menory one used to associate with french reds of that era. It was flavoursome with good fruit. Not many of us ever get to try a 45 year old Bordeau. It was a privilege and had there been fewer of us I would have jumped at filling my glass to linger longer with it.
